Gifts as Tradition
The act of giving gifts has been a tradition that goes back thousands of years. The first gifts given were food and tools or weapons. Gifts were often practical and meant to be used every day as more extravagant items lacked purpose. As human beings increased in knowledge and the ability to appreciate nature and all life, gifts were given that did not hold any practical purpose, but was instead given to allow someone to appreciate a sentiment.
Gifts eventually were given to show love and for the purpose of winning someone’s heart. Many acts of adoration, or to offer a sign of sentiment would be given too, especially if courtship wanted to be pursued. This eventually led to marriage and engagement gifts, and finally Valentine’s Day, where romantic gifts that are sweet and thoughtful are given. These gifts have come to be expected yearly, and while traditional gifts of chocolate and roses are expected, being creative and going the extra mile is also welcome.
As long as human beings have had possessions, we have had the urge to share those possessions with those around us, especially to those we love. The act of giving is a tradition that will continue longer than all other traditions, and exists in every culture that is known. In addition, giving a gift to someone who has recently lost someone or something close to them, while nothing can ever make up for the loss, can help to bring someone a smile, which can make all of the difference.
